meet the blog
Welcome to JND’s new blog! It is my goal for this blog to be an interior design journal of sorts – to teach readers design skills they can apply to become happier in their homes. I’m planning on including all sorts of great things! From design and styling guides, product shopping links, and organizing tips, to my all-time favorite recipes. I hope you enjoy this journey with me!
Side note: I was recently featured in an interior design blog post on Redfin highlighting the top trends of 2022! Check it out HERE.
meet jamie
Let’s start off with an introduction. My name is Jamie, and I started my design studio, Jamie Nell Design, at the beginning of 2019. I got my introduction to design in college, when I took a leap of faith and applied for the Interior Design program at BYU-Idaho. At that time, it was a nationally awarded and CIDA accredited program that was pretty-dang difficult to get into.
Guys, I had no idea what interior design really was when I applied. I had no real experience. I couldn’t draw, didn’t know how to draft, and had no knowledge of construction or architecture. But I had always been creative, organized, and had a strong drive to succeed. (The three things I now know to be essential to be successful in the interior design field). I believe my acceptance to that program was Heaven-sent; I somehow got into the program upon first application. In that program, I grew a deep love for residential design, developed my God-given talents that I didn’t even know existed, and began to realize the great things I wanted to do with my life and career.
Meet Jamie Nell Design
How it started
Fast forward to 2019. I had spent a few years working for a local cabinet manufacturer designing in various styles and with various budgets for dozens of clients. Also, I had just gotten back from serving a mission for my church. I knew I didn’t want to strictly go back to the cabinet world, but that the knowledge and skill-base I gained there could help me as I fulfilled a long-time dream of mine – starting my design studio.
Again, I had just gotten back from a mission, which meant I had taken a year and a half break from the design world, so I was starting from complete scratch. Thankfully, I kept up my relationship with my previous job and continued selling their cabinetry on an independent basis. By the middle of 2021, I had 3 builders I was designing for and supplying cabinetry to, had completed projects on over 100 homes, and was making six figures.
I wasn’t very happy there, though. My dream when I started my business was to work with individuals and families because when I started my career and was working with those dozens of clients in their homes, I realized the deep impact design had on their lives. I also learned more about historic and classical homes and the beautifully crafted interiors that enrich the lives of those that live there. (Elements so commonly missing in modern homes). As I designed, I loved seeing how my designs improved each client’s relationships, health, and overall happiness and contentment. And friends, I needed to be there.
where we are now
As fate would have it, recent market changes have forced my builders to come to almost a complete halt. Fortunately for me, this has allowed the time and opportunity to get back in front of individuals, as people are remodeling and restyling their homes with a greater fervency than ever. (Literally the only good thing I can say came because of COVID).
So now, I’m back to my original mission to bring personality, quality, craftsmanship, function, and beauty into individual homes. Inspired by the traditional homes I grew to know and love, each design aids individuals and families to be happier in their homes and to live their best lives. Because I believe home is central base. If you are happy at home, you can better spread that goodness elsewhere in your life. Trust me, I’ve seen it.
Q&A’s
- What else is there to know about you? I have the absolute best marriage with my husband, Eli. We got married the Summer of 2020 and I don’t think we’ll ever get out of the “honeymoon” phase. I love the outdoors. Paddle boarding, biking, hiking, skiing – when I get outside all stress and worries melt away. I dream of one day having a big flower garden and an orchard. Even though I am very much in the fast lane, I like to simplify my life as much as possible. I also love to sew, and to craft, and to cook.
- How often will you post? Weekly on Wednesdays.
- What other content is planned for the interior design blog? Design and styling guides, organizational tips and hacks, entertaining tutorials, lifestyle updates, product shopping links on items I actually use for my clients, and delicious recipes. Have I mentioned how much I love patterns and color? They can be pretty intimidating for people, but you’re going to learn all about how to use them in your home too. It’s going to be sweet!
- How do we get more from JND? Yes, there is more! If you’d like even more guidance and insight on design, sign up for JND’s Insiders Club. It’s a weekly email that is fun, uplifting, and will have additional easter eggs of goodness exclusively for subscribers. Join us HERE. You’re not going to want to miss it!
I truly hope you enjoy reading my interior design blog as much as I will enjoy writing it. My objective is that as you read, you will gain insights on your own life and inspiration on how to create the home and life of your dreams. You deserve it, and I’m here to help you get there!
Wishing you the most wonderful week,
Jamie Nell
